SunSp.t

Joe MacPhail is a keyboardist, composer, songwriter, drummer, and producer from Durham, NC. SunSp.t is Joe MacPhail’s musical brand. A live SunSp.t show incorporates keyboards, vocals, and a beat machine. Songs, Compositions, Improvisations and Beats. 

SunSp.t recorded works are a growing musical gallery that allows for Joe’s continual definition and redefinition. This gallery includes the atmospheric vocoder songs of ArtAttack (2019), the Funk/Rock and glitchy ballads of Psychical (2021), and the modern Beat-type music of the Jofi series (2023). The live SunSp.t show takes this original music and adds idiosyncratic covers of Roots and Pop songs, creating a dynamic show centered around keyboard performance.

Joe is deeply inspired by the history and evolution of American music. Genres are used in SunSp.t to create imagined musical dialogues across time and space. These imagined dialogues are designed to express the emotion of the current moment. 

Joe MacPhail has worked on over a hundred albums in North Carolina, and performed with dozens of bands. Currently a member of The Oblations, Dreamroot, Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba, T Gold, XOXOK, The Back Pocket, Country Soul Songbook w/Kamara Thomas and Kym Register, and Turnabout Players.
