I Went Back in Time
“I Went Back In Time” surges with heated, harmonically rich guitars from top to bottom. Between FitzGerald’s resonant intro drone, the layers of anthemic electric and acoustic strumming throughout, and Daniel Fields’ blistering slide, the listener is gifted with pure six-string giddiness. His voice ramps seamlessly between near-screaming belts and soft, melodious speak-singing. Gabe Anderson and Dylan Turner conjure a fertile and reliable rhythmic backbone while Saman Khoujinian substitutes delicate OP-1 and DX-7 sprinkles for more traditional organ lines.
FitzGerald recalls a sense of immediate knowing with his wife, sharing that it seemed he had always known and loved her. The couple each made art about this phenomenon in different ways, and at different times, to process these feelings. “Early on, she gave me a folder of photoshopped photos,” he remembers, “cutout images of our previous selves superimposed into the same place – a drunken barbeque, bed, my parent's backyard, a show. It was funny, and I felt the truth of it in my gut. I was greedy for her entire life.” Later on, when he visited her hometown, the two held hands in the 30-degree weather, and that’s the moment when FitzGerald imagined himself as a young short-order cook at her college diner. “I wrote this song for her birthday, he shares, “and as I wrote I realized: I'm so glad she didn't know me in my 20s. It wasn't the right time, but I'm so glad I know her now. Where will our timeline go next? I'm still greedy for our future.”
